Regina & Andromeda

The last few months had been uncharacteristically kind to Regina. Having been accustomed to misfortune and the like, having a rather blissful year seemed...strange. But she was not about to question the circumstances life had given her, for they were far nicer than the ones she had come here with some time ago. Never would she question her life in the desert, her home, nor the privilege given to her by the stallion that ruled over their extended family. And of all things, never would she question the one thing most precious to her in this moment; her daughter.

The leggy filly had just reached six months of age, old enough to show she would live to see many years ahead of her. Regina had become a recluse during the last few weeks of her pregnancy to give birth to Andromeda, both out of fear for the child and the wish for privacy. She had feared for many weeks she would lose Andromeda like she had lost Henry, but clearly those fears were in vain. The striking black and white filly was as strong as an ox from day one. She had been a large foal to give birth to, requiring Regina to take some time to recover afterwards. And now at half a year old, it was quite clear Andromeda would tower over her peers. While Regina herself was not a short mare, nor Angelus a short stallion, it was bewildering to see how fast and tall their progeny was growing to be. In no time, Andromeda would gain height on her mother.

But for now, Regina was more than content to watch her daughter explore the oasis and enjoy her youthfulness while it still lasted.

He was troubled by so many things now.

The black stallion stalked through the sands, musing about the state of his herd and their part in the homeland. It was growing steadily - his mares were having children and they were strong. All in all, any stallion should be happy enough. And yet Angelus couldn’t resist the feeling that there was something that needed to be done; something was gnawing at the edges of his mind and urging him to slip deeper and deeper into what he secretly feared was insanity. No other equine could see the companions as he did. None could hear the demonic wraiths that whispered in his ear night and day, plaguing his consciousness with demands and suggestions. The sun was still hot as always, but less piercing during the winter months. Still, Angelus had a nice sheen of sweat on his back, but that was more to do with his pace than the temperature.

Cursing the calm, the demon turned towards the Oasis. Time was running out to create a solid basis for the religion that had been buried for years. His hooves kicked sand up in sprays behind him, each grain finding its way either into the collective or into a place where it was less welcome. His tail was quite good at brushing off the bits that got themselves between his rump, but lower down was more of an issue. Angelus snorted and shook his coat with his muscles to dislodge the annoyance. That failed, he gritted his teeth and entered the rich foliage that surrounded the Bridonna Oasis, even in the dead of winter. There he stopped. In the water played a filly, of whom he wasn’t terribly familiar. Sure, the admission was rather embarrassing, but when his mate was in such a feeble state of mind, it was hard to keep up with everything else. He turned his gaze over and it came to rest upon Regina’s paler body. His heart thrummed with a long-forgotten emotion. If he was truthful, Angelus would say he was indeed attracted to his lovely Queen, but their contract was one of business. It was only signed in blood, not love. He bowed to her in a sign of respect and acknowledgement, not sure of how to interact with his Queen, chosen by logic.

Regina & Andromeda

The pale grulla mare hummed quietly, observing Andromeda exploring her birthplace; the place that would always be safe and welcoming to her, so Regina hoped. Soon Andromeda would be old enough to be left alone, granted not for any extended periods of time, but a few hours wouldn’t hurt the filly. A little separation would help her quiet, stoic daughter be more social, she reasoned. She would be safe around the other members of the herd and her siblings. It was comforting to know there would always be a watchful eye on Andromeda, to allow Regina to finally carry out her plans. To finally starting leading wayward souls to a proper home, to raise them to never question anything – to always be obedient. Everything was beginning to fall in place.

Regina’s ears twitched slightly, catching a distant rustle. Apparently Andromeda heard the same thing, for her petite head flew up, brown eyes wide in what could be described in concern, rather than fear. “Mama?” came the questioning squeak, her voice still very new to articulated speech. Regina’s inky eyes flickered about the oasis, but she did not hesitate to command Andromeda to her side with a curt jerk of her head. The leggy filly quickly scurried over to her mother’s side, tucking in close until the perceived threat was gone. Ever the reflection of Regina, especially of Regina in her youth, the black and white filly displayed little to no fear at all; rather it seemed she was just as vigilant as her mother in trying to discover the intruder ass warm brown eyes scanned the oasis.

As soon as the tension had flooded Regina’s body, it quickly left as the intrusion appeared. Of course it was Angelus – she should have known he would come looking for them eventually. Whether it was to ensure she was still alive or to see the state of the child he had yet to meet was to be determined. Feeling her mother’s unease ebb away, Andromeda’s head appeared around Regina’s shoulder and chest, peering up at the black stallion curiously as he approached. The grulla mare gave her King a welcoming smile. Despite her self-induced exile, to enjoy peace with her child, she still held some kind of affection for the stallion. “Angelus,” she spoke, her smoky voice just as welcoming as her smile. “I’d like you to meet your daughter, Andromeda,” she added, moving slightly to further display the black and white filly.

The peace of a new addition to his family was quickly dispelled by the filly’s hasty departure from the water. Angelus’ eyes narrowed as he searched for the threat, cold fire blazing up in his chest as he prepared himself to grant the intruder a less pleasant welcome. His eyes and ears worked busily to determine the disturbance, but when they couldn’t find anything he relaxed. Still the epitome of regal, the demon king stepped forward, extending elegant leg in front of elegant leg. His eyes lingered on Regina, taking in her pale skin and her white markings just as he had the first time that they had met. However, since his strange “meeting” with Cancer, his countenance had changed and he was no longer soft. Affectionate, perhaps. A gracious lover, he supposed. But weak and soft, no. He was a king and it was time that he acted like one.

His liquid coal eyes dropped to the black and white filly who stood beside her mother. By the Dark One she was tall for one so young. She would tower over Juno, but her older sister could probably still control the crowd. It wasn’t determined yet though, so he was interested to see how this new progeny would turn out. “Andromeda,” he said in his warm baritone voice. “Or should I say, princess?” Angelus smiled, warmth slithering into his heart. He was so full of darkness now that he wondered if he’d ever see the light again. Surely there was a place for ones such as he - standing at the right hand of the Black God, speaking through his wraith-like minions...

His mind came back to contemplate the mare and her daughter. “My queen,” he said, stepping forward to push the side of his nose against Regina’s cheek in a sign of affection. “How have the days and nights treated you? It has been long since I have heard word from you.” In the statement was a slight warning: disappear again without my knowledge and you will find that I do not lose what is mine so easily. There was less anger in it than he had previously thought, but nevertheless, he was not so eager to find his queen dead upon the sands, having to replace a strong mind with the broken one that was his dear Nakita. “You are worth much to me, Regina. I would like to have you more present in the herd, as you are the one whom I trust to lead if I must go for a time.”

Regina & Andromeda

The tall filly, who appeared to be nothing but long, spindly legs, grinned happily up to the stallion her mother had said was her father. Though she had not ever seen him until now, the young filly was still happy to see him. Mother had told her plenty during their time alone and she had grown to hold the stallion in high regards. “Princess?” she repeated, her young, fragile voice full of wonderment. Her mother had told her that they both were very important horses within their herd, but Andromeda had never realized how important until that moment. Mother had never told her just how highly they sat within their family. Warm brown eyes turned to her mother, bewildered at the new development. Rather than give her daughter any explanation, however, the petite mare merely nuzzled her with affection. She had more important things to focus on at the moment, most of which stood before her and seemed displeased with her – and for good reason, too.

Regina knew her disappearance was perhaps uncalled for and unnecessary, but it was hard not to worry about the health of their child first and then her own after the birth. Andromeda’s birth had been trying and had taken quite a lot out of her. However, she knew there was no excuse for her prolonged absence. She knew she had been selfish by staying away for so long and had the decency to look remorseful. At least her lover did not seem too perturb by her prolonged absence. She could hear the warning in his voice, but he did not display any outward signs of any anger.

“Dear Angelus, I apologize for my prolonged absence from our herd. There is no proper excuse besides I was selfish, after I took time to heal from Andromeda’s birth. Her’s was trying and took a great deal out of me, but afterwards…it was nothing but pure selfishness in wanting to be alone with our daughter before sharing her with everyone else,” she spoke, having the decency to also downcast her inky colored eyes with regret. “With my health better and Andromeda strong, you will have naught to fear. Our presence will be much more frequent with the herd from now on.”
