Welcome to Defying Gravity, a semi-realistic natural horse rpg!
There are no mutations, magic, or rainbow ponies here; the horses of the Homelands must carve out a life for themselves by their wits and strength alone. We have no cannons or "site-wide plot" to speak of as we've found that there are a ton of creative people out there and when our members are left to their own devices the plots stay fresh and fun for everyone. So if you're looking for a laid back site with no so called "unique" plot you must adhere to, Defying Gravity just might be the place for you!!

Halete Forest was one of the prettiest, calmest environments in the Homeland. It offered mares a haven from big, scary stallions with mischief on their minds. It gave them shelter in the form of lavender meadows, wispy willows, and other enchanting foliage with the added bonus of fragrant wildflowers in the springtime. It was truly a different world to behold. Female equines often congregated here to be safe. They didn't know what lurked behind the tall shrubs.
Geoff.
The stallion almost guffawed at the thought. He could only imagine himself as a vicious brute for a moment before he realized how ridiculous it sounded. Geoff was a fairly virtuous stallion with normal, everyday urges. His tawny, messy mane fell on this side and the other of his neck as he emerged from behind his pretend fortress. His trot was heavy as he stepped into the small clearing before him. His search for companionship would continue... Geoff wouldn't have minded running into a fellow stallion, either. He simply wanted someone to pal around with. If that equine happened to be a mare, fooling around wouldn't be too bad either.
The forest was definitely the place to go to find anyone to talk to, if her memory served her right. It always seemed to be the most populated open terrain in the land, home to mares, stallions, and their babes alike. There was just enough tree cover to provide shade and shelter from the weather, but also plenty of open areas for grazing and the like. It was the perfect safe haven for any wanderer, as well as the calmest environment one could seek out. Or so it seemed. Liane wasn’t too sure about it, given how rarely she had ventured into Halete in her lifetime.
The tawny colored mare was perfectly content to weave through the trees, humming merrily as she did so. It was a fair day, with little to no incidents that had disturbed her good mood. She was quite content to flit around the forest, since so far no one had held her interested. Yet
she thought with a sharp snap of her deep brown tail, her dark eyes searching the woods. She just had a feeling today would not disappoint her.
Geoff caught her scent just as she entered the biome. He felt a kind of kinship to the forest around him and would tolerate no intruders... The stallion's imaginative mind kept him in a state of pretend bliss. Geoff pressed on through the trees, this time toward the tail of a mare.
His nostrils sent him in her direction, his nose close to the ground as if he were a ferocious wolf-hound. The stallion snorted and raised his head at the sight of her.
The light-colored female was breath-taking, as most mares were to the weak-in-the-knees stallion. Geoff could be awkward at times around mares, though more often he was charming and drop dead devilish. The odd combination of behaviors he sported came from his deeply-rooted goodness and his outward bad ass-ery. The stallion trotted her way, eager to know her name.
"Oh hey! Didn't expect to see anyone around here today! It's a bit too cold for some." It was true, the springtime chilly wind had made its way to Halete, leaving it barer than usual for that time of year.
The mare was rather oblivious to the presence of the stallion, but that was typical for her. She often trusted her environment a little too much, but she had little reason to distrust those around her. Nothing of ill fate had occurred to her, so why distrust those who presented no harm? And so far, Mother Nature had only treated her kindly in return, thus Liane saw little need to alter who she was and disrupt the order of things.
The mare’s ears twisted at the voice that invaded her senses. Dark brown eyes flickered about, trying to locate him, before she had to turn about to face him. The golden mare gave the stallion a warm, friendly smile, undeterred by the abruptness of his appearance and little disregard for the strange marking on her chest that was now fully displayed to him. She always felt that the marking made her unique, anyways. “Too cold? Nah, the weather is just right. A whole heck of a lot better than up north, that’s for sure,” she replied cheerily. Sure, there was a slight chill, but it was certainly better than the weather she had endured lately. “The name’s Liane, and yours?” she added, tilting her head slightly in questioning.

Spring was here yet again, and Saeren was loving every bit of the weather. Sure it wasn’t warm, but the scents of new life and budding flowers were enough to set her mood soaring. She was at peace, wandering along the deer path and simply letting nature take her in and please her senses. A small butterfly fluttered past, barely missing her creamy nose. Saeren smiled and let out a quiet sigh of satisfaction. Being home was more than she had thought it would be after a period of time away. But now here she was, ready for what would come next, and feeling intoxicated with the heady scent of spring and the hormones that came along with it. Truth be told, the mare was feeling frisky in an oddly subdued way. Perhaps open was a better word; her barriers were down and she was simply enjoying the life around her. It wasn’t long though before she caught the scent of other equines in the forest. Faint snatches of conversation reached her ears; intrigued, the mare followed the sounds of the voices. It had been a while since she’d had good company around. She was only planning on watching from the bushes until an opportune moment came around, but a stray leaf had other plans. With a rather loud sneeze, the offending plant was sent whirling away on the air currents, and Saeren was left with a rather sheepish look on her face.

Geoff smiled and lowered his glance to the light dunskin's hooves as he laughed a bit. His naturally sunken-in eyes gave him an almost bored appearance all of the time, his upper eyelids always covering part of his eyes. Normally it appropriately displayed his emotion - blasé. Today, however, he was happy to see another horse, especially one of the opposite sex. The stranger captured his glance like a bee to a honeysuckle, drawing him closer. He took a few more steps toward her to clear the gap. "I've never been much north of here," he said with a closed grin, his ears perked to her.
The mare revealed her name - a lovely one, at that. "It's Geoff, nice to meet you," he greeted casually. The stallion didn't use quite the same charms as some other, more aggressively flirtatious studs. Geoff tried to reel them in slower, more deliberately. He actually wanted to know them. The dusky equine almost opened his mouth to continue their newfound conversation when a sneeze interrupted him. Suddenly all of his attention had left one mare and gone to the next. Lucky guy, he thought with a grin.
It was obvious the sneeze was of the feminine kind, and an equine's was very distinguishable from any other creature's. Geoff hadn't come across a mare in days, let alone two at once! The Mother must have smiled down upon him today. The stallion whinnied gently in the other hidden mare's direction. "Hello?" Geoff glanced quickly back at Liane with a smirk and then back to the other girl.
The dunkskin mare grinned, the expression warming up her face considerably. “The North can be fun, especially when the first snow falls. Though it’s not pleasant to stay for more than a week or so. I prefer to go north when it’s too warm ‘round these parts. It’s easier to stay cool that way,” she replied cheerfully. She remained unruffled from his closer approach; she had no reason to fear him, not when he seemed to be fairly genuine and charming. Another bright smile graced her features, before she continued, “And it’s a pleasure to meet you, Geoff.”
Right as the words left her mouth, a sneeze cut through their conversation easily. It caught her attention, causing dark brown colored eyes to snap towards the general direction of the sound, only to spot another mare. And here she was, complaining only a few minutes ago that she was all alone! Now she had plenty of company for a while to come. “Good afternoon!” Liane called out airily, her head tilting slightly as she inspected the other mare. She seemed rather embarrass to be caught, or at least embarrassed about sneezing? Liane wasn’t entirely sure, but she didn’t feel the slightest bit of annoyed for the intrusion. More company was always a good thing in her book.
The sound of water rippling and the birds singing was a welcome change from the cold solidarity of the mountain landscape. Yet even with the different scenery, Saeren was more welcoming to solitude than to encounters with other horses so soon. She wanted the time to recollect herself and who she was. The sudden sneeze rocked her stance, and her hindquarters brushed up against the rough bark of a tree planted behind her. The scabs of still-healing wounds were hard and rubbed against the tree, causing the mare to breath deeply through her nose, careful to let the anticipation of pain pass her by and to let her mind calm itself. A smile crossed her face when her arrival was greeted by two equines of very cheerful nature; it was pleasant to meet such lighthearted, carefree souls for once. Her heart lifted substantially and she grinned. The distance between them seemed much farther now, and so she lifted her hoof and stepped out of the foliage. “Hi,” she replied, her lips curving up in a forgotten smile. “It is a very pleasant afternoon, I have to agree. Geoff, Liane.” A light laugh exited her throat and she danced closer to the pair. “Pleasant company as well! I have to admit, your conversation drew me in; I was walking along and I heard you speaking.” She looked at both the mare and the stallion, noting that they were both extravagantly marked. She was plain compared to the two of them, except for her mane. “I’m Saeren.”

Geoff smiled gently and nodded softly as he listened to Liane's explanation. He was interested. He hoped that his different and less conforming reaction didn't make her think he wasn't. Geoff was always ready and willing to listen to a beautiful mare's words, and this mare was one in a million, to be sure. His brown eyes couldn't help but follow down from her eyes to the curious white on her chest and down to he black legs. 'Pretty' was hardly an appropriate word for such beauty. His half-lidded eyes moved back to her gaze as his head nodded a final time in recognition of her words. "A pleasure". He seemed to be getting off on the right hoof, right?
Geoff had never felt luckier as his attention turned to the other mare, equally as stunning. Her hair was what stuck out to him about this "Saeren". The combination of a dusty sand-colored coat and the charcoal black streaks of her mane and tail made him very interested. In fact, the stallion could feel his interest welling up inside. Sure, he was a stallion with stallionly needs and here were two pristine specimens of the opposite sex... How could he not be a little warmer than usual?
Geoff shook his head a little at his own involuntary urges with a smile. They would rear their heads as he was trying to keep his cool and charm his way into their lives... He'd just have to hold it together. "Nah, that's totally cool," Geoff smiled, glancing back to his first acquaintance. "We were just starting to get to know each other, so it's good you came in when you did." The stallion's ratty tail swished behind him, removing a bothersome fly from his rump as he decided where the conversation would head next.
"So where're you two from? I'm a Drulan boy myself. Orginally, anyway."
The golden colored mare offered the other, lighter colored mare a welcoming smile. “It’s nice to meet ya, Saeren,” she spoke, her deep brown gaze just as warm and welcoming as her smile. The other mare was a sandy color, lighter than her own coat, though “plain” was not a word Liane would use to describe her. Her coat and markings were simpler than Liane’s own, or even Geoff’s, but it was still lovely in its own right. While Liane had the bizarre, silvery-white splotch across her chest and the splattering of white speckles everywhere from head to shoulder, the other mare had a unique mane and tail. The mare’s dark colored eyes flickered back to Geoff, her attention torn away from the other mare as he spoke. “Well my mama and I were both born in Bastein. She came from a long line of swamp residents. Don’t know about my papa, since I never met him,” she replied, offering the two a shrug. She had never been upset over the lack of a father in her life. “But when my mama died after I turned two, I’ve just been wanderin’ about. I suspect I’ll end up returning to the bayou, one day.”
The mare was more comfortable than she’d been in months. First a spot of regular company, and then what felt like it could be a nice amity that might go on for a while. Certainly she was thinking about sticking around for a while - this Geoff seemed like a nice enough stallion, and Liane was more of a normal mare than she’d met since she was a young filly. Yes, Saeren could picture herself leading a quiet life, at least for a little while. Then she’d move on - a mare like her couldn’t be tied down too long. There was too much to do, and she was more independent than anything. When asked about her heritage, she grinned. “Born in the freelands, but I was up in the mountains for a while. Some stallion decided to keep me up there, but he soon found out that I make my own decisions.” Saeren winked, hoping that they didn’t think of her as one of those feminist mares that were always wandering the freelands. Really, she just wanted what happened or didn’t happen to be at least partly her decision. She was curious though. “So what brings a lone stallion to the freelands? Surely you have females drooling after you, what with that handsome face and your charm?”

"The swamp? Wow, haven't ever been down there..." Geoff, in truth, feigned interest. Of course, he'd been the one to ask.
Geoff hadn't really been anywhere but Drulan and the Freelands. He wasn't the traveling type. Mares were everywhere, why go to distant places to find what could be found where he was? Here he was with two, after all.
The stallion turned to Saeren. "He 'kept' you there? That's not right! Everyone should be free to leave a herd if they want!" He knew that pretty well. He'd left Drulan the moment he could. He didn't want another stallion running his shots. He was his own male.
Geoff smiled at Saeren's compliment and laughed a little. "I've been here since I was weaned. I can't stand to be under another stallion, but I really don't care to own land. Seems like the perfect place. And when it comes to mares, I'm just happy to have you two here to talk to," he smiled. He couldn't help but feel his skin warm at their glance... It had been too long...
OOC: Did we decide the foals would be consensual? It's been so long that I forget. xD
The dunskin and grey mare was quite content with how life was at the moment. She had good company with a couple of seemingly friendly, companionable equines. It was the most she could ask for, considering for the mean time, she lacked a place to call home or a lover to return to. She was in no rush for either things, however; she was still young and had the ability to enjoy her youth to the fullest. Liane’s attention was brought back to the subject at hand rather abruptly, as Saeren spoke. “He kept you there?! That ain’t right,” she spoke up hotly, her accent worsening a fraction with the spike of emotions. “A stallion is in for a reckonin’ if he thinks he can ‘keep’ me,” she added with an indignant snort.
Liane’s dark gaze shifted to Geoff as Saeren shifted the attention to him, drilling him with questions of her own. Granted, Liane was aware lone stallion often frequented the Freelands at a higher rate than mares – but typically they found a mare to settle with, or a herd and a rank to beckon them away. But then again, he seemed the type to constantly roam, but never settle. “It must be nice to wander wherever your hooves lead you and make your own decisions,” she commented rather absentmindedly. What an interesting life that would be.

The swamp and the forest. So they were from here and there and everywhere. Saeren found herself smiling once again. Surely she hadn’t smiled this much since she was a free, roaming mare. She also found herself drawn to Geoff in a way that had to be plain and simple attraction. The mare stepped closer, creating a more intimate setting for her new friends. Liane was a mare that Saeren figured she could spend more time with. Having friends when one didn’t have a herd, now that was strange. It was also strange that the other mare didn’t seem to have a claim on Geoff - most mares were very protective of their stallion. This arrangement suited her just fine though, and she relaxed her hind leg, cocking it behind her. A slight breeze blew through her mane and tail, playing with the long, wiry tendrils.
“I hope this isn’t too forward or strange, but how long are you both staying around here?” The answer would determine if she went south or stayed put for a season, perhaps. Saeren had no plans for the future, but she was open to anything. With a loud but contented sigh she settled in to continue their conversation.

Geoff watched Liane as she spoke. He didn't know whether to laugh or just keep his mouth shut. The way she spoke... Was it that she was maybe a little dim, or was it simply her upbringing that made her speak that way? Geoff decided on the latter, though not being able to completely control his expression. He had no room to insult her - she really was good company. Everyone was brought up differently, and Geoff scolded himself for thinking that way for even a second.
"Yeah, it's not bad," the stallion replied to the yellow beauty. "Sure beats herd life."
Looking back to Saeren, Geoff noted her step closer. With just that one step, the stallion felt lust wash over him like a waterfall. He knew the feeling well. After all, how could he not feel that way with two incredibly beautiful mares right there for the taking? No, he could control himself. Geoff's only outward sign of his current state was a slightly deeper intake of air than normal, as if he was trying to stay calm. It took him a moment to understand her question before he let loose of his air and spoke: "This is kinda where I live, so..." Geoff answered. "I'm pretty set on staying in the Freelands." He didn't know if that was the answer she had been looking for, but there it was.
