Parched vegetation splintered as cold hooves brought themselves down to the earth. Audits were pricked, picking up on the sounds of other equines. Yes, it was close by now. Extremely close. Nostrils flared, capturing the familiar scents of the Plains. This was where she could talk to Eli in peace, where they could catch up on each other's business. Smiling to herself, the blood bronze pelt of the mare glinted in the sun as she quicken her pace. Accelerating to an easy lope, she let out a crow of happiness. Today was going to be a good day.
"Come on, Mai! You can't be that slow, can you? After all those races?" a smooth tenor voice teased, inside the mare's head.
"Oh, shut up Eli. You know that I can beat you any day of the week, 24/7." Maui snorted. She gave a small playful smirk and pick up speed.
"Haha, sure. I'll race you now. See who's the best?"
"Deal. First one to the Plains wins!" Building up speed, Maui's limbs were soon a blur of dark bronze. She extended her elegant neck, leaning forward to help decrease wind resistance. Flaring her nostrils, taking in more oxygen, Maui raced up the hill and over. The momentum of herself and the steep downhill slope of the hill increased her velocity to a new record. The wind whipped up her mane in a tangled mess of hair. Maui held her tail high with pride as it trailed like a banner behind her.
The thrum of hooves pounding the ground created muffled thuds, almost like the sound a soft thunder. Blades of grass were flattened as the lithe body swept by. The chartreuse foliage began to creep under the clamorous hooves. With each stride, Maui ate up more and more of the land. "Nearly there," she thought to herself, pushing her body even further. The heart of the Windswept Plains were closing in.
"Ha! I win!" Maui exclaimed in her mind as she kicked the air in happiness. "What's the score now? Me: 10, you: 3?" she gloated.
"Now, now. No need to be such a show off. I believe it's, Mai: 10, and me: 8. Can't forget the--"
"Quiet Elijah. I don't want to remember that," Maui shook her mane. It was quiet, with a small breeze trailing through. Looking around, she saw no bodies of other equines, though their scent was strong. "Elijah, let's stop a while and eat. I can smell other horses, but I'm too tired to find them."
"Sure Mai. I could use some food too."
Sighing contently, Maui lowered her head and began to graze slowly.
