Tonto had been avoiding the slinking, tawny beast for what felt like hours.
The stallion moved cautiously along a cliff of Dask, about 50 feet above the canyon's basin. It was a fairly large ledge with little to no chance of the skilled climber falling... Unless the cat got much closer.
Normally, the animals of the canyon respected Tonto for all he did for Dask. He kept the creatures in harmony with each other, and helped others in need. He looked after his home. He was its guardian. That was, until that thing came along.
The 'devil cat', as Tonto often referred to the common mountain lion, was not really following the equine. It knew to steer clear of horses... fully-grown ones, anyway. Tonto harbored an irrational fear of the felines, little to the cat's knowledge. The stallion planned on keeping it a secret, too. It was embarrassing...
The white and black stallion was fully alert and aware of the cat's every movement, not that there were many. The lion was draped over a ledge not too far from Tonto, sleeping off the day. He dare not descend; the clacking of hooves against rock would surely alert the beast. Tonto thanked the Great Father that none of his herd was around to see him in this hypersensitive way. The horse's hair stood on end, his tail raised and his black ears flat against his skull. He was even thankful Scout was no where to be seen. That was where he'd really get a good laughing at.
Tonto took a few steps back, looking up and down to assess the best course of action. He had to get away from the menace, but how...
