Welcome to Defying Gravity, a semi-realistic natural horse rpg!
There are no mutations, magic, or rainbow ponies here; the horses of the Homelands must carve out a life for themselves by their wits and strength alone. We have no cannons or "site-wide plot" to speak of as we've found that there are a ton of creative people out there and when our members are left to their own devices the plots stay fresh and fun for everyone. So if you're looking for a laid back site with no so called "unique" plot you must adhere to, Defying Gravity just might be the place for you!!

For some reason the mountains had always called to him. No matter how far away he wandered, he always came back. Kincaid had been gone for three years if he estimated correctly and had decided a few months ago that it was time to come back. After traveling nearly everywhere imaginable in the homeland, his mountain home was waiting for him and he could not ignore it any longer. There was a new king here, which made the blue stallion hesitate at the border. Although he was no stranger to fights, it was not quite on his agenda for the day. Instead he walked the border between the mountains and its neutral neighbors, wondering if any equine would come this way. Perhaps then he could avoid confrontation, but any creature that happened upon him would possibly think the complete opposite.
{ooc} Wow. That was not meant to be that short and sweet but hey. Feel free to reply with just a paragraph or have at it for as long as you want.
There was an incessant echo in Tika's mind today, and usually she never met anything of negativity. Today, however, she found herself slightly irked at the urge to wander into the mountains. What's so fascinating about this place, anyway? She pondered this as she skittered around rocks and mounds of snow, shivering at the winds as they picked up alongside her pace. Perhaps, because of this griping, she'd become unaware of the wonders that exploded from beyond the snow -- it took her a few moments to shut up and open her eyes, but once she did she found herself stopping mid-stride; this would have been alright, if it weren't for the fact that she was in snow and had been cantering. The sudden jerk of the breaks thrust her hind end over her fore and before she knew up from down she'd hit the ground with a thud.
A tiny wail escaped her mouth. As if I wasn't cold before! She wiggled around as she tried to dislodge herself from the snow that blanketed her, gaining her balance and coughing from the shock. Tika pushed herself with her front legs with enough force that she found herself on her bum within seconds. Dazed, but no worse for wear, the filly remembered the entire reason for her accident. Her head shot from all thoughts as she stared wide-eyed at the vast landscape of the mountains. She didn't notice that her jaw had dropped, she didn't have a thought in her mind. One thing rang, faintly at first, but then like echos in a cave: Gotta explore it! She found herself squealing in excitement, onto her hooves in a blink and before she knew it she was trotting alongside the outskirts -- eyes never leaving the expansion of trees, snow, mountains, clouds, and movement from the winds. It was alive. She found herself having to pick her legs up higher as she reached deeper snow, but completely disregarded the scent that followed her upwind. This place is so pretty -- I have to see it all! I have to I have to I have to!

Stoically he stood at the edge debating with himself whether he should just wander into the territory or wait for a patrol come by. So far he had seen nothing of any horse that might have inhabited the mountains and that did not bode well for Kincaid's opinion of the king. 'He is far too lax if he leaves his borders completely abandoned. Father always patrolled.' He snorted and then breathed deep for the fresh or slightly stale scent markers that should have been here but there was nothing, just faint smells but even those could have just been horses walking willy-nilly in and out of the territory and he wouldn't be surprised if the king was none the wiser. 'This is not the proper way.' He shook out his white-streaked mane and flicked his tail against his flanks.
Then he heard a sharp noise that caused every muscle beneath his scarred pelt to clench but otherwise he did not move except to turn his head and flick his ears this way and that in a sorry attempt to locate the sound. Unfortunately he was not that great of a tracker, even though his father had worked so hard to teach him everything he knew. Instead Kincaid had excelled at fighting and ruling. Of course he'd picked up a few tricks from his father and could get by fine but he was still nothing to write home about. Completely guessing which way to go, Kincaid trotted off to where he thought the sound had come from. "Hello?" He called into the nothingness.
Tika lost track of how long she'd been going, knees nearing the height of her withers with the depth of snow and her lacking stature. She didn't care, though, she was soaking it all in. All of the trees, colors, smells, everything. It was so beautiful! Her face twitched and her back trembled in delight, but she was so immersed in her over-excitement of the adventure that could await her that she failed to notice a number of things: she was bound to freeze her hooves to pieces at the pace she went forth, she didn't actually pay attention to if she was allowed here or not (though that never stopped her before); and she was completely missing that she'd soon be toppling over the bearer of a scent that was consuming her air. Even through her heavy breaths, it took Tika a considerable amount of time and a considerable amount of strides forth to notice that last issue; and when she did, the mare felt a hit-the-wall type of halt command her body. Like a deer watching a snake, the young filly grew stiff as a tree's trunk. Ears were perked high, eyes alert and fading from the excitement. She'd learned several times that it wasn't always a good idea to come in with her ideas of life and barge into the lives of others. It'd kind of been beaten into her a couple of times.
However, the overpowering urge of her way of life and her very being usually overwhelmed the caution that had been forced into her mind. It took Tika but a few moments of fear and hesitation before incredible joy and giddiness took control. Her knees began to knock a bit, but the smile that usually accompanied her face swung back full-force and with a flick of her tail she went for higher ground and continued forward. Another horse another horse another horse...
It didn't take long for her to locate the other horse, and she felt a tremble in her wither as a retort to her decisions. It didn't stop her, though, and after noting how small her looked from the distance she took no time to slide on her haunches, down the cliff, so she could meet this stranger. She whinnied slightly, snow flying in tufts at her sides and her hocks screaming from the cold. How her body kept up with her mind was a story on its own. She slid into the lower ground, the force pulling her on her feet and fluidly going into a trot with her tail up high and her eyes glittering. It wasn't long before she slowed a bit and realized he was not as small as she'd thought. She had about 10 feet in distance between them, and decreasing, but she slowed her pace to a halt and huffed and puffed (her body hated her for what she put it through) before calling out to him: "Hey! How goes it?"

'Keep your defenses up. Do not show weakness or you'll be eaten alive. Wait until you know what they want before giving them anything.' His black ears flicked backward as his father's words came back to him. Kincaid held himself stiffly, lifting his tail slightly from the snow and turning to await the other horse's arrival. He heard them crashing through the trees and knew his father would be disappointed in that horse.
Kincaid and his father had lived in a gruff and business-type relationship. After his mother had died, Kincaid's father had done his best to raise his son to be what he considered to be a good horse, though more or less ended up training him to be a leader but without the harsh militant sense that other stallions had been known to do with their sons. There was no bad blood between the two and Kincaid still held an immense amount of respect for the old stallion. His advise had more than once saved the blue roan's life in a skirmish.
The mare then came into view and Kincaid softened just slightly. She was much younger, barely over maturity from what he could tell, and smaller. He felt as though he had nothing to fear but his instincts would still not let him relax completely. "Hello," He repeated to the mare with a polite bob of his head, although he was a bit caught off-guard by her friendly and confident approach. He searched for a proper response and cleared his throat before speaking again. "Are you from this territory?"
Her lungs were boiling in the chill, her body shivering. Tika was still huffing a bit, caught up in all the movement and energy from before. This horse was large -- much larger than she, but he shared a similar look to her. She was beaming, her head up and ears perked forward in excitement. This was a new horse, after all! Maybe he wants to play! But when he spoke, it took her a moment to react. She felt the hair along her spine spike, a chill running like the morning breeze. Leaning back a hair, the filly felt herself pause. Uh, woops. Maybe meeting him wasn't a good idea, if she possibly did something wrong in not being from here.
"Uh, er.." Her eyes squinted slightly, her mouth screwing a bit as she felt a heat boiling from her chest and throat. She flashed a bit of her teeth in an innocent smile, her tail flipping and urging her to run off. "I'm not, sorry. Are you?"Jeeze, way to go. He looked like one of those serious types, she noticed (after having calmed down enough to actually see what was going on). Could this be a potentially bad thing for her? I can run and find a new entrance into this wonderful place, if I have to! I must explore it! _________________________________________________ NOTES:My nose hurts and I can't breathe but yay reply?
