The only female figure in his young life, Joy set the stage for the emotionally scarred stud we see today. Her negligence and disgusting quest for power through the use of her body have lead him to believe nearly all mares and stupid, useless, unfaithful tramps and planted the seeds for his hatred of inherited power.

Volta: ♥♥♥♥♥
Volta was the one and only love of Merlo's life. They first met when Merlo was just a yearling and she a filly of two. Thought they did not part on the best of terms then, Merlo was immediately drawn to her. She held the promise of everything his young life and been so lacking in - beauty, intellect, and love. Their relationship was a tumultuous one for though Volta's calm affection was like a balm to his soul, there are some wounds that cannot be fixed overnight and his short temper and explosive anger drained her and often drove her away. Still they were able to come together in the end and Merlo was eventually able to achieve his dream of making himself a King and Volta his queen. Soon after their rise to the throne Volta got with foal and for a time the couple was happy but the pregnancy was a difficult one and though their foal survived Volta bled out and died. Her death was a crippling blow to Merlo but in a strange way it cooled his passion and his rage. He simply seemed unable to bring himself to feel such strong emotions when it seemed his heart had been ripped from his chest.
