Gwyneth
She had always been a friend of the forest. Her own mother had borne her there, she’d grown into a pretty (if not slightly eccentric) mare while nestled amongst the towering pines, and yet now she was leaving. Gwyneth took a deep breath, looking back at the trees. Her heart twisted with grief, and yet the promise of a new future without fear and without loneliness grabbed her attention. The trees were dark and close set, each branch intertwining with the other. Sunlight rarely reached the bottom of the forest, and so the sudden brightness caught her off guard and she was forced to squint. The mare’s eyes watered and she blinked rapidly to ease the pain of the piercing light. One small step forward, she instructed. Obediently her left foreleg shifted and she planted her hoof in the soft, yielding terrain of the swamp. There were trees here, yes, but they swam in the water as the fish did; their roots submerged in the algae coated liquid. “Mother, forgive me,” she murmured as her right hoof followed suite. Her heart pounded as those two first steps turned into two more, and two more after that.
Strange smelling air filled her lungs as for the first time in her life, Gwyneth left the forest. It was exhilarating and frightening at the same time to be surrounded by air rather than by wooden giants. She felt exposed, her silvery, faintly dappled coat warming up from the lack of shade. It was cool still, but not as cool as the forest, which had snow in patches here and there. Gwyneth looked around, but couldn’t tell if there were other equines in the vicinity. She’d heard of a small band of swamp dwellers and had always been curious, but as of yet had not had the courage to wander out and make their acquaintances. With a brief look behind, she squelched out into the marshland and continued on with the knowledge that what awaited her ahead was more than what she left behind.
